This gem of a park, just south of Sheboygan, is a gorgeous escape from city life. Its sand dunes endlessly roll along the shore, as if we were no longer in Wisconsin, but in some southern coastal town. This is a great summer getaway if you're a beach goer or a hiker.
We enjoyed a picnic in the dunes and casual hike up the cordwalk. The cordwalk is a 2.5 mile boardwalk that winds through the dunes, just inland from the shore. At times, you find yourself surrounded by dunes, unable to see the shore, engulfed in a unique, peaceful environment.
Kohler-Andrae State Park requires a visit permit and no dogs are allowed (except for a small picnic area at the edge of the park). It is located about 45 minutes north of downtown Milwaukee or 1 hour south of Green Bay. To get there, exit Hwy V off of I-43.
Sheboygan is just up the road. We recommend dinner at Trattoria Stefano, a little Italian restaurant located downtown on 8th Street.
